CranioMandibular Orthodontics

Nowadays, Orthodontics is performed by many dentists around the world.

The new systems (the "intelligent brackets and wires" or "clear aligners") simplify practitioners’ work, and offer a good solution for the general dentist.

Patients are increasingly demanding about aesthetics.

However, there is more to moving teeth than just aesthetics.
Commonly, orthodontists tend to think only of dento-alveolar movements and compensations, extracting premolars on a regular basis in an attempt to gain space.
They frequently forget that teeth and occlusion dictate the position of the mandible, thus influencing TMJ, function, posture, etc.

CranioMandibular Orthodontics is a completely different approach, from standard orthodontics.

Following the concepts of Prof. Sadao Sato from Yokosuka, Japan and Prof. Rudolf Slavicek from Vienna, Austria, CranioMandibular Orthodontics becomes a powerful tool to treat TemporoMandibular Dysfunction (TMD) or to prevent TMD resulting from an incorrect orthodontic treatment.

The first premolar is one of the most important teeth regarding function. It is CRITICAL in Class II patients. Extracting them (as is often the case in Class II) can result in future functional problems.

A detailed diagnosis with Dynamic Functional Analysis should be the starting point of any orthodontic treatment. If the mandible is displaced, even by some tenths of a millimeter, it should and can be repositioned. This is the only way we can know exactly where to move the teeth in a dento-alveolar way.

Important fact: The mandible moves in 3-D. It does not just rotate on an axis.

The Mini-Marathon Course on CranioMandibular Orthodontics introduces orthodontists and general dentists to these concepts and teaches them to think laterally, paying special atention to function.

Important fact: It is possible to have function and aesthetics at the same time.
